| Overview

Temperature Modes define the temperature control behavior of the system across the CCU, web and mobile portals, occupant applications, and supported devices. Each mode determines how heating and cooling setpoints are displayed, adjusted, and maintained, enabling users to meet specific comfort and operational requirements.

 

| Objective

The Temperature Modes feature is designed to:
  • Simplify the process of adjusting temperature setpoints.
  • Improve the user experience when managing heating and cooling setpoints.
  • Reduce user confusion associated with dual setpoint operation.
  • Maintain system stability by enforcing configured deadbands and temperature limits.
  • Provide a consistent and optimized temperature control experience across supported devices and applications.

Temperature Modes introduce configurable temperature control behaviors at both the building and zone or device levels. These modes define how users interact with heating and cooling setpoints and how the system responds to temperature adjustments.

 

| Goals

The Temperature Modes feature provides the following capabilities:

  • Supports the Dual Setpoint with Fixed Deadband temperature mode.
  • Retains the existing Dual Setpoint with Variable Deadband temperature mode.
  • Provides a simplified Single Setpoint mode for occupant temperature control.
  • Provides a Setpoint Offset mode for relative temperature adjustment.
  • Ensures compliance with configured user limits, deadbands, and HVAC control logic across all temperature modes.

| Zone-Level Temperature Modes

Temperature modes are configured and managed at the zone level, allowing each zone to maintain independent temperature control based on its operational requirements.

Dual Setpoint Variable Deadband Allows users to adjust heating and cooling setpoints independently while maintaining the minimum required deadband.
Single Setpoint Allows users to control temperature using a single setpoint.
Setpoint Offset Allows users to adjust comfort relative to the system-defined temperature setpoint.

 

| Temperature Mode Change Confirmation

When switching from Dual Setpoint with Variable Deadband to Dual Setpoint with Fixed Deadband, Single Setpoint, or Setpoint Offset, a confirmation dialog is displayed. The dialog identifies the parameters that will be reset to their default values and prompts the user to confirm or cancel the change.
 
A confirmation is required because Dual Setpoint with Variable Deadband allows independent adjustment of heating and cooling setpoints, whereas Dual Setpoint with Fixed Deadband, Single Setpoint, and Setpoint Offset enforce a fixed deadband relationship between setpoints. As a result, user limits, deadbands, desired temperatures, and other related parameters may be reset to ensure compatibility with the selected temperature mode.

| Temperature Mode Parameters

Heating User Limits:

Heating User Limits define the minimum and maximum heating setpoints that users can select for a zone. These limits prevent users from configuring heating temperatures outside the allowable range established by the system or building administrator.

Example:

  • Heating User Limit Min: 67°F
  • Heating User Limit Max: 72°F

Users can select a heating setpoint only within this range.

Cooling User Limits:

Cooling User Limits define the minimum and maximum cooling setpoints that users can select for a zone. These limits ensure that cooling temperatures remain within acceptable operating boundaries.

Example:

  • Cooling User Limit Min: 72°F
  • Cooling User Limit Max: 77°F

Users can select a cooling setpoint only within this range.

Heating Desired Temperature (HDT):

The Heating Desired Temperature (HDT) is the target temperature used by the HVAC system when the zone requires heating. When the zone temperature falls below the heating setpoint, the system initiates heating to maintain the desired comfort level.

Example:

  • Heating Desired Temperature = 70°F

The HVAC system heats the zone to maintain approximately 70°F.

Cooling Desired Temperature (CDT):

The Cooling Desired Temperature (CDT) is the target temperature used by the HVAC system when the zone requires cooling. When the zone temperature rises above the cooling setpoint, the system initiates cooling to maintain the desired comfort level.

Example:

  • Cooling Desired Temperature = 74°F

The HVAC system cools the zone to maintain approximately 74°F.

Unoccupied Zone Setback:

The Unoccupied Zone Setback defines the allowable temperature deviation from the occupied setpoints when the zone is unoccupied. This feature helps reduce energy consumption while maintaining acceptable temperature conditions in the space.

Example:

  • Occupied Heating Setpoint = 70°F
  • Occupied Cooling Setpoint = 74°F
  • Unoccupied Zone Setback = 5°F

During unoccupied periods, the heating and cooling setpoints may be adjusted by up to 5°F to reduce HVAC runtime and improve energy efficiency.

Note: Unoccupied Zone Setback is applied only during scheduled unoccupied periods and does not affect occupied temperature settings.

Temperature Mode defines how users interact with heating and cooling setpoints within a zone and determines how the system manages temperature control, deadbands, and setpoint adjustments.
